Dental Fixed Bridges

What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of artificial teeth (pontics) anchored to the adjacent natural teeth (abutments). Bridges restore chewing function, improve appearance, and maintain oral health by preventing the remaining teeth from shifting. They are a long-term solution compared to removable dentures.
Materials used for bridges include ceramics, porcelain, metals, and combinations thereof. The choice of material depends on the location of the bridge and aesthetic preferences.

Common Types of Dental Bridges

There are four primary types of dental bridges. Your dentist will determine the most appropriate type based on factors such as the condition of your teeth and the size of the gap.

Traditional Dental Bridge

A traditional bridge is the most common type. It consists of crowns that are cemented onto the teeth on either side of the gap. An artificial tooth (pontic) is attached to these crowns, bridging the space. This type requires healthy teeth on both sides of the gap.

Cantilever Dental Bridge

A cantilever bridge is used when there are teeth only on one side of the gap. It is supported by a crown cemented to a single tooth, with the pontic extending outward to fill the space. This type is typically used for replacing teeth at the front of the mouth due to its limitations in strength.

Maryland Dental Bridge (Resin-Bonded Bridge)

A Maryland bridge is a non-invasive option that uses metal or porcelain wings bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth. The pontic is attached to these wings. This type is not as durable as a traditional bridge and is primarily used for replacing front teeth.

Implant-Supported Dental Bridge

An implant-supported bridge is anchored to dental implants placed in the jawbone. This option is considered the most stable and durable, preserving natural teeth. However, this may take months to complete as it requires multiple surgeries to embed the implants in the jawbone and place the bridge.

Why Do You Need Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are versatile dental restorations that effectively replace missing teeth. They restore both the function and aesthetics of your smile, providing a long-lasting solution to gaps in your teeth.
Fixed bridges offer several benefits for the overall oral health:

Tooth Replacement

Bridges restore the natural look and function of missing teeth.

Bite Restoration

They help maintain the proper alignment of your bite, preventing jaw joint problems.

Speech Improvement

Bridges can improve speech clarity by filling gaps in your mouth.

Chewing Function

They restore the ability to chew comfortably and efficiently.

Preventive Care

By replacing missing teeth, bridges help prevent the remaining teeth from shifting, which can lead to bite problems and further tooth loss.
