According to Oxford Dictionaries, orthodontics is the treatment of irregularities in the teeth (especially of alignment and occlusion) and jaw. We have orthodontic solutions which are braces and clear aligners. Both are tried and tested to be able to manipulate the teeth as well as improve a patient’s dental health.
A lot of people who have problems with their teeth always ask – so what is better, braces or aligners?
Know that there are several factors being considered when it comes to knowing what is best for the patient. We consider not only the teeth but also things outside of the mouth such as his work, lifestyle, priorities, future plans, even personal goals. That is why it is important to set an appointment with an experienced and qualified dental practitioner to be able to address your concern.
BRACES
This orthodontic solution is the more traditional approach which is comprised of wires and brackets. Dentists use certain techniques to be able to enhance the smile or fix the patient’s concern with the bite.
Different types of braces include – metal braces, ceramic braces, tooth-colored braces, lingual braces (placed behind the teeth) and self – ligating braces. So no need to worry about just having one option if you opt to go braces.
Pros of having braces:
- Effective, reliable, and proven
- Ability to address pronounced malocclusion
- Brackets are being placed by the practitioner (brackets are fixed to your teeth)
Cons of having braces:
- Dietary restrictions
- Special cleaning and care is required
- May irritate soft oral tissue
CLEAR ALIGNERS
This orthodontic solution uses clear plastic aligners (no metal, no wires and brackets whatsoever) to move teeth into their optimal position. Aligners should be worn 24/7 except eating and when brushing the teeth, so that the power of the aligners can be maximized.
There are different brands of clear aligners being offered in the market but here at Apostol Dental our brand of choice is K Line Aligners.

Pros of having clear aligners:
- No dietary restrictions
- Not hard to clean
- Invisible
Cons of having clear aligners:
- More expensive than braces
- Removable type – easy to misplace and if patient does not wear it, this will not work
- Speech pattern might change
Special Extra Note:
After your orthodontic treatment, it is advised to wear a removable orthodontic device (or retainers) to keep teeth in the correct position.
All information noted above is just a preview of the two orthodontic solutions available for you. There are surely other things to be covered once you are able to meet face to face with a practitioner especially when your case has been assessed and studied very well. Again, it is still always best to see an expert to know what can be done to your case.
